[직독직해 연습] 천지창조 영어로 말하기1, 창세기 1장 1-5절, 혼자서 영어공부, 영어문장 끊어읽기

영어실력을 향상하는 가장 좋은 방법은 내 목소리로 영어문장을 계속 반복해서 읽는 것입니다. 이때 중요한 것은 의미를 알고 읽는 것입니다. 전혀 모르는 문장은 아무리 읽어도 정확한 의미를 파악하지 못하기 때문에 영어문장 읽기를 포기하게 됩니다. 

영어문장을 읽으면서 동시에 해석하는 것을 '직독직해'라고 부릅니다. 다은 제시하는 순서대로 따라 해 보세요. 어느 순간 영어문장을 읽으면서 머릿속에 그림을 그리는 놀라운 현상이 일어납니다. 머릿속에 그림이 그려지면 그다음에는 입에서 영어가 흘러나오게 됩니다. 

꼭 기억해야 하는 것은 반드시 '내 목소리가 내 귀에 들리도록 소리 내서 읽기'를 해야 한다는 것입니다. 이 포스팅 이후에도 계속 영어문장 직독직해 연습 글을 올릴 예정이니 꾸준히 따라 해 보세요.

1. 영어문장 들어보기

2. 영어문장 소리 내서 3번 읽기

뜻을 모르더라도 읽을 수 있다면 일단 3번 읽어보세요. 절대 중간에 끊지 말고 처음부터 끝까지 읽어보세요.

 

Genesis 1:1-5

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.  And God said, "Let there be light, " and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

 

3. 어휘 암기하기

어휘를 암기하는 것은 어휘를 저축하는 것과 같습니다. 암기한 어휘를 문장에 적용시키면 오래도록 기억할 수 있습니다. 이렇게 저축한 어휘는 어느 순간 폭발적으로 효과를 나타냅니다. 

• beginning 시작, 처음
• in the beginning 처음에, 태초에
• create 창조하다, 만들어내다
• heaven(the heavens) 하늘
• earth 땅
• without ~없이
• form 형태
• void 빈, 공허한
• darkness 어둠
• deep 깊은
• the deep 깊음
• face 얼굴, 표면
• spirit/the Spirit 영/성령
• hover 맴돌다, 떠다니다
• light 빛
• separate ~을 가르다, 분리하다
• call 부르다, 전화하다
• call+목적어(A)+목적격보어(B) A를 B라고 부르다

4. 직독직해 

영어문장 끊어 읽기를 연습합니다. 영어문장과 끊어서 해석한 우리말을 읽으면서 직독직해를 연습하세요.

① In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

• In the beginning 태초에
• God created 하나님이 창조하셨다
• the heavens and the earth 하늘과 땅을

② The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 

• The earth was 땅은 ~였다
• without form and void 형태가 없고 비어 있는
• and darkness was 그리고 어둠이 있었다
• over the face of the deep 깊음의 표면 위를 덮고
• And the Spirit of God was hovering 그리고 하나님의 영이 움직였다
• over the face of the waters 물의 표현 위로

③ And God said, "Let there be light, " and there was light.

• And God said 하나님이 말씀하셨다
• Let there be light 빛이 생겨라
• and there was light 그리고 빛이 있었다

④ And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 

• And God saw 그리고 하나님은 보셨다
• that the light was good 그 빛이 좋았다 
• And God separated 그리고 하나님이 나누셨다
• the light from the darkness 그 빛을 어둠으로부터

⑤ God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

• God called the light Day 하나님이 그 빛은 '낮'이라고 부르셨다
• and the darkness he called Night 그리고 어둠을 하나님이 '밤'이라고 부르셨다 
• And there was evening 그리고 저녁이 되었다
• and there was morning 그리고 아침이 되었다
• the first day 첫째 날이다

5. 문법노트

문법은 직독직해를 하는데 필요한 부분만 간단하게 설명할 예정입니다. 문법에 너무 얽매이면 문장의 의미를 파악하기도 전에 문법적으로 접근하게 되기 때문에 영어문장을 읽으면서 해석하는 것이 어려워집니다. 꼭 알아야 하는 부분만 이해하고 영어문장을 읽으면서 해석이 된다면 그냥 넘어가도 됩니다. 

 

♠ God called the light Day and the darkness he called Night.

'call + 목적어 + 목적격보어' 순서로 쓰는 것이 문법적으로 맞지만 예외적으로 강조하고 싶은 부분을 문장 앞에 쓰는 경우가 있습니다. 앞에 문장 'God called the light Day (하나님께서 그 빛을 낮이라 부르셨다)'는 맞는 순서대로 쓴 경우이고 그 위에 오는 'and the darkness he called Night (그가 그 어둠을 밤이라 부르셨다)'는 목적어에 해당하는 'the darkness'를 문장의 가장 앞으로 옮겨서 쓴 경우이다. 이 문장의 원래 모양은 'and he called the darkness Night'입니다. 

이렇게 문장의 순서를 바꾸는 것을 문법적 용어로는 '도치'라고 부릅니다. 영어문장에는 '도치'가 자주 사용되기 때문에 읽으면서 뭔가 의미가 통하지 않는다고 생각된다면 적당히 재배열해봐야 합니다. 영어문장을 많이 읽어보면 이런 도치된 부분을 자연스럽게 찾아내고 읽으면서 동시에 해석이 가능해집니다. 

6. 전체 문장 끊어 읽기

앞에 끊어서 읽으면서 해석한 것을 기억하며 읽어보세요. 영어문장을 읽을 때 끊어진 부분에서 아주 잠깐 쉰다고 생각하면서 읽으면 끊어진 단위대로 해석할 수 있게 됩니다. 

 

In the beginning, / God created / the heavens and the earth. / The earth was / without form and void, / and darkness was / over the face of the deep. / And the Spirit of God was hovering / over the face of the waters. / And God said, / "Let there be light, " / and there was light. / And God saw / that the light was good. / And God separated / the light from the darkness. / God called the light Day, / and the darkness he called Night. / And there was evening / and there was morning, / the first day.

 

7. 전체 문장 다시 읽기

끊어 읽기를 하나하나 생각하는 것이 아니라 전체 내용을 머릿속에 그림을 그리며 읽어보세요. 3-5번 멈추지 않고 읽어볼 것을 권합니다.

8. 자신의 음성으로 녹음하기

영어문장을 읽는 것이 익숙해졌다면 자신의 목소리로 녹음을 한 다음 들으면서 어색한 부분을 점검해 보세요. 이 과정을 통해서 좀 더 자신 있게 영어로 말하는 연습을 할 수 있습니다. 앞에 원어민이 읽어주는 파일과 비교하면서 연습해 보세요.

 

9. 전체문장 반복해서 읽기

자신의 목소리로 녹음해서 원어민 발음과 비교해서 교정을 했다면 이제 마지막으로 무한반복 읽기에 도전하기 바랍니다. 암기한 어휘나 끊어 읽기를 적용하는 것이 아니라 영어문장 자체를 계속 읽으면서 입에서 자연스럽게 나올 수 있게 반복해 보세요.
