2. 영어문장 소리 내서 3번 읽기

뜻을 모르더라도 읽을 수 있다면 일단 3번 읽어보세요. 절대 중간에 끊지 말고 처음부터 끝까지 읽어보세요.

 

Genesis 1:6-8

6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." 7 And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

 

3. 어휘 암기하기

어휘를 암기하는 것은 어휘를 저축하는 것과 같습니다. 암기한 어휘를 문장에 적용시키면 오래도록 기억할 수 있습니다. 이렇게 저축한 어휘는 어느 순간 폭발적으로 효과를 나타냅니다. 

• expanse 광활한 공간, 팽창
• midst 중앙, 한복판
• separate 분리하다
• heaven 하늘
• second 두 번째의

 

4. 직독직해 

영어문장 끊어 읽기를 연습합니다. 영어문장과 끊어서 해석한 우리말을 읽으면서 직독직해를 연습하세요.

① And God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." 

• And God said 하나님이 말씀하셨다
• Let there be an expanse 큰 공간이 만들어져라
• in the midst of the waters 물 한 가운데에
• and let it separate 그것이 분리시키도록 해라
• the waters from the waters 물로부터 물을 

② And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so.

• And God made the expanse 그리고 하나님께서 큰 공간을 만드셨다
• and separated  the waters 그리고 그 물을 분리시키셨다
• that were under the expanse 그 물은 큰 공간 아래에 있었다
• from the waters 그 물로부터
• that were above the expanse 그 물은 큰 공칸 위에 있었다
• And it was so 그리고 그것이 그렇게 되었다

③ And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

• And God called the expanse Heaven 그리고 하나님께서 그 큰 공간을 하늘이라고 불렀다
• And there were evening 그리고 저녁이 되었다
• and there was morning 그리고 아침이 되었다

5. 문법노트

문법은 직독직해를 하는데 필요한 부분만 간단하게 설명할 예정입니다. 문법에 너무 얽매이면 문장의 의미를 파악하기도 전에 문법적으로 접근하게 되기 때문에 영어문장을 읽으면서 해석하는 것이 어려워집니다. 꼭 알아야 하는 부분만 이해하고 영어문장을 읽으면서 해석이 된다면 그냥 넘어가도 됩니다. 

 

♠ separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse

'separate A from B (B로부터 A를 분리시키다)'에서 A는 앞에 나오는 the waters, B는 뒤에 나오는 the waters입니다. 이 문장에서 두 개의 the waters를 각각 관계대명사 that이 수식을 하고 있습니다. 

관계대명사는 앞에 나오는 지칭하는 명사를 넣어서 해석하면 됩니다. that은 각각 the waters를 지칭하는 것으로 관계대명사절을 괄호로 묶으면 이 문장이 아주 단순해집니다. 

separated the waters (that were under the expanse) from the waters (that were above the expanse)

그 물(뒤에 있는 물)로부터 그 물(앞에 있는 물)을 분리시켰다

이 문장에서 관계대명사를 the waters를 넣어서 해석해 보면 다음과 같이 됩니다. 

the waters that were under the expanse : 큰 공간 아래에 있는 물

the waters that were above the expanse : 큰 공간 위에 있는 물

정리해서 전체문장을 해석하면 '큰 공간 아래에 있는 물을 큰 공간 위에 있는 물로부터 분리시켰다.'라고 할 수 있습니다. 관계대명사절이 앞에 나오는 명사를 수식한다고 해서 꼭 관계대명사절을 먼저 해석한 다음 앞에 있는 명사를 수식하는 것처럼 해석할 필요는 없습니다. 이렇게 하다보면 앞에 나온 내용을 놓칠 수 있기 때문에 영어문장을 읽으면서 순서대로 해서하는 연습을 하는 것이 가장 좋습니다. 

관계대명사가 무엇을 가리키는지 모르겠다면 일단 다음의 규칙에 따라 해석을 해 보세요.

[who / which / that + 동사

who : 그 사람이 / which : 그것이 / that : 그 사람이 or 그것이

[whom / which / that + 주어 + 동사]

whom : 그 사람을 / which : 그것을 / that : 그 사람을 or 그것을

이렇게 넣어서 문장의 순서대로 해석을 하고 나면 관계대명사가 가리키는 것이 누구인지 또는 무엇인지 자연스럽게 알 수 있게 됩니다. 영어문장을 직독직해하기 위해서는 반드시 순서대로 해석하는 연습을 하는 것이 중요합니다. 

 

6. 전체 문장 끊어 읽기

앞에 끊어서 읽으면서 해석한 것을 기억하며 읽어보세요. 영어문장을 읽을 때 끊어진 부분에서 아주 잠깐 쉰다고 생각하면서 읽으면 끊어진 단위대로 해석할 수 있게 됩니다. 

 

6 And God said, / "Let there be an expanse / in the midst of the waters, / and let it separate the waters from the waters." / 7 And God made the expanse / and separated the waters / that were under the expanse / from the waters / that were above the expanse. / And it was so. / 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. / And there was evening / and there was morning, / the second day.

 

7. 전체 문장 다시 읽기

끊어 읽기를 하나하나 생각하는 것이 아니라 전체 내용을 머릿속에 그림을 그리며 읽어보세요. 3-5번 멈추지 않고 읽어볼 것을 권합니다.

8. 자신의 음성으로 녹음하기

영어문장을 읽는 것이 익숙해졌다면 자신의 목소리로 녹음을 한 다음 들으면서 어색한 부분을 점검해 보세요. 이 과정을 통해서 좀 더 자신 있게 영어로 말하는 연습을 할 수 있습니다. 앞에 원어민이 읽어주는 파일과 비교하면서 연습해 보세요.

 

9. 전체문장 반복해서 읽기

자신의 목소리로 녹음해서 원어민 발음과 비교해서 교정을 했다면 이제 마지막으로 무한반복 읽기에 도전하기 바랍니다. 암기한 어휘나 끊어 읽기를 적용하는 것이 아니라 영어문장 자체를 계속 읽으면서 입에서 자연스럽게 나올 수 있게 반복해 보세요.
