2. 영어문장 소리 내서 3번 읽기

뜻을 모르더라도 읽을 수 있다면 일단 3번 읽어보세요. 절대 중간에 끊지 말고 처음부터 끝까지 읽어보세요.

 

Matthew 5:13-16

13 You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. 14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. 

3. 어휘 암기하기

어휘를 암기하는 것은 어휘를 저축하는 것과 같습니다. 암기한 어휘를 문장에 적용시키면 오래도록 기억할 수 있습니다. 이렇게 저축한 어휘는 어느 순간 폭발적으로 효과를 나타냅니다. 

• salt 소금
• earth 땅
• lose (lost-lost) 잃다
• taste 맛
• saltiness 소금기, 짠맛
• restore 회복하다, 되찾다 
• except ~을 제외하고
• throw (threw-thrown) 던지다, 버리다
• trample 짓밟다
• foot (feet) 발
• set (set-set) ~을 놓다, 배치하다
• light 빛, 밝게 하다, 비치다
• world 세상, 세계
• city 도시
• hill 언덕
• hide (hid-hidden) 감추다, 숨기다
• nor ~도 또한 아닌
• lamp 등, 전등, 등불

• stand 작은 탁자
• in the same way 같은 방법으로

4. 직독직해 

영어문장 끊어 읽기를 연습합니다. 영어문장과 끊어서 해석한 우리말을 읽으면서 직독직해를 연습하세요.

① You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. 

• You are the salt of the earth 너희는 이 땅의 소금이다
• but if salt has lost its taste 그러나 만약 소금이 그 맛을 잃어버린다면
• how shall its saltiness be restored 어떻게 그것의 짠맛을 다시 찾을 수 있을까?
• It is no longer good for anything 그것은 더이상 무엇에도 유익하지 않다
• except to be thrown out 밖에 던져지는 것과
• and trampled under people's feet 사람들에 의해 짓밟히는 것을 제외하고는

♠ 문법노트

A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

▶ set : 과거분사

set은 과거분사로 앞에 나오는 A city를 수식하고 있습니다. set은 현재-과거-과거분사가 모두 set입니다. 이 문장의 동사느는 cannot be hidden입니다. 

 

③ Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.

• Nor do people light a lamp 사람들이 등불을 켠다
• and put it under a bastet 그리고 그것을 바구니 아래에 두지 않고
• but on a stand 작은 탁자 위에 둔다
• and it gives light to all in the house 그것이 집에 있는 모든 것을 비춘다

♠ 문법노트

Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand

▶ nor + 동사 + 주어

문장의 가장 앞에 부정어(nor)가 오면 주어와 동사가 도치되어 [동사+주어]의 순서로 나옵니다. 이 때 동사가 조동사나 be동사라면 [조동사/be동사 + 주어]가 되고 일반동사라면 [do동사 + 주어 + 동사원형]의 순서가 됩니다. 

이 문장의 전체 구조는 'not A but B (A가 아니라 B)'입니다. not 대신에 앞에 나온 문장에 이어 '~도 또한 아닌'이라는 의미로 nor가 왔습니다. 문제는 A와 B를 찾는 것입니다. 

A : under a basket

B : on a stand

nor가 문장의 앞에 있더라도 전체 문장의 의미를 보면서 A와 B를 찾아야 합니다. A를 'under a basket'라고 하고 B를 'on a stand'라고 한 다음에 이 문장을 해석하면 '사람들은 등불을 켜서 바구니 아래에 두는 것이 아니라 작은 탁자 위에 놓는다'라고 할 수 있습니다. 

 

④ In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. 

• In the same way 같은 방식으로
• let your light shine before others 너희의 빛이 다른 사람들 앞에 비추게 하라
• so that they may see your good works 그들이 너희의 선한 행동을 보고
• and give glory to your Father 너희의 아버지에게 영광을 돌리게 하기 위해서
• who is in heaven 아버지는 하늘에 계시다

 

5. 전체 문장 끊어 읽기

앞에 끊어서 읽으면서 해석한 것을 기억하며 읽어보세요. 영어문장을 읽을 때 끊어진 부분에서 아주 잠깐 쉰다고 생각하면서 읽으면 끊어진 단위대로 해석할 수 있게 됩니다.

6. 전체 문장 다시 읽기

끊어 읽기를 하나하나 생각하는 것이 아니라 전체 내용을 머릿속에 그림을 그리며 읽어보세요. 3-5번 멈추지 않고 읽어볼 것을 권합니다.

8. 자신의 음성으로 녹음하기

영어문장을 읽는 것이 익숙해졌다면 자신의 목소리로 녹음을 한 다음 들으면서 어색한 부분을 점검해 보세요. 이 과정을 통해서 좀 더 자신 있게 영어로 말하는 연습을 할 수 있습니다. 앞에 원어민이 읽어주는 파일과 비교하면서 연습해 보세요.

 

9. 전체문장 반복해서 읽기

자신의 목소리로 녹음해서 원어민 발음과 비교해서 교정을 했다면 이제 마지막으로 무한반복 읽기에 도전하기 바랍니다. 암기한 어휘나 끊어 읽기를 적용하는 것이 아니라 영어문장 자체를 계속 읽으면서 입에서 자연스럽게 나올 수 있게 반복해 보세요.
