[영어원서읽기] 어린왕자 영어원서로 영어 공부 [The Little Prince 1-2]

1. 전체읽기

전체 문장을 소리내서 5번 읽는다.

I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them. But they answered: “Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?” My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:

 

 

2. 어휘암기(어휘저축)

오늘 암기해야 하는 어휘는 반드시 오늘 암기한다.
어휘 중에 아주 쉽다고 느끼는 것도 있고 이미 앞에 나온 어휘도 있다. 이미 암기한 어휘는 빠르게 지나치고 모르는 어휘는 꼭 암기하자. 앞에 나왔던 어휘는 다시 한 번 점검하자.

whether : ~인지 아닌지
drawing : 그림
frighten : 놀라게 하다, 무섭게 하다
picture : 그림
boa constrictor : 보아뱀
digest : 소화하다
since : ~때문에

inside : 내부, 안쪽
so that : ~하기 위해서
clearly : 분명하게
need to : ~할 필요가 있다
explain : 설명하다

3. 끊어읽기

암기한 어휘를 적용해서 끊어읽기를 연습한다.

I showed my masterpiece / to the grown-ups, / and asked them / whether the drawing frightened them.

나는 나의 걸작품을 보여 주었다 / 어른들에게 / 그리고 그들에게 물었다 / 그림이 그들을 무섭게 하는지 아닌지를 (그림을 보고 무섭지 않은지)

But they answered: / “Frighten? / Why should any one be frightened / by a hat?”

그러나 그들은 대답했다 / 무섭다고? / 누가 무서워하겠니 / 모자에 의해(모자를 보고)

My drawing was not a picture of a hat.

내 그림은 모자그림이 아니었다

It was a picture of a boa constrictor / digesting an elephant.

그것은 보아뱀의 그림이었다 / 코끼리를 소화시키고 있는

But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, / I made another drawing:

4. 집중해서 읽기

큰 소리로 최소 5번 이상 멈추지 않고 읽는다.

5. 문법 엿보기

문법은 영어문장을 이해하기 위한 도구가 될 정도만 알면 된다.

1. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant.
현재분사 digesting

boa constrictor 뒤에 나오는 digesting는 현재분사로 앞에 나오는 명사를 수식한다. 이 때 명사와의 관계가 능동이기 때문에 현재분사가 된다.
분사에 대해 설명하면 좀 장황해질 수 있는데 가볍게 읽고 넘어가면 좋겠다.
분사는 동사의 성질을 그대로 가지고 있으면서 문장 내에서 형용사의 역할을 한다. digesting는 동사 digest(소화하다)의 현재분사 모양이다. 동사의 성질을 그대로 가지로 있기 때문에 주어, 목적어, 보어 등을 동반할 수 있다. digesting은 앞에 나오는 명사 boa constrictor를 수식하고 뒤에 목적어로 an elephant를 동반하고 있는 모양이다.
→ 그것은 코끼리를 소화시키고 있는 보아뱀의 그림이었다

2. They always need to have things explained.
과거분사 explained

위에 설명한 현재분사와 같은 내용인데 이번에는 수식을 받는 명사와 분사와의 관계가 수동이기 때문에 현재분사가 아닌 과거분사를 썼다. things가 설명하는 것이아니라 설명을 받는 상태인 것이다. 그런데 이 문장을 직역하면 왠지 어색하다. 직역과 의역을 같이 보고 자연스럽게 우리말로 바꾸는 연습을 하자.
→ 그들은 항상 설명된 무엇인가를 가질 필요가 있다
→ 그들은 항상 설명이 필요하다
→ 그들에게는 언제나 자세히 설명해 주어야 한다

6. 우리말 번역 보기

번역본과 같이 읽으면서 직역이 아닌 의역의 의미를 파악한다.

나는 내가 그린 멋진 작품을 어른들에게 보여 주며 그림이 너무 무섭지 않으냐고 물었다. 어른들은 되물었다.
“모자가 뭐가 무섭다는 거니?”
나는 모자를 그린 것이 아니었다.
그것은 코끼리를 통째로 삼키고 나서 소화하는 보아뱀의 모습이었다. 나는 어른들이 알아볼 수 있도록 보아뱀의 배 속을 그려야 했다.
어른들에게는 언제나 자세히 설명해 주어야 한다. 나의 그림 제2호는 바로 이랬다.

 

7. 마무리(shawdowing)

읽기 연습을 충분히 한 후 자신의 목소리로 녹음해서 들으면서 따라한다.
