영어성경읽기(산상수훈18) 마태복음 7장 12-14절, 직독직해(ESV성경)

2. 영어문장 소리 내서 3번 읽기

뜻을 모르더라도 읽을 수 있다면 일단 3번 읽어보세요. 절대 중간에 끊지 말고 처음부터 끝까지 읽어보세요.

 

Matthew 7:12-14

12 So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. 13 Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 

 

3. 어휘 암기하기

어휘를 암기하는 것은 어휘를 저축하는 것과 같습니다. 암기한 어휘를 문장에 적용시키면 오래도록 기억할 수 있습니다. 이렇게 저축한 어휘는 어느 순간 폭발적으로 효과를 나타냅니다. 

• whatever ~하는 것은 무엇이든지
• wish 바라다, 원하다
• law 법
• the Law 율법
• prophet 선지자
• enter 들어가다
• narrow 좁은
• gate 문
• by ~을 통과해서
• wide 넓은
• way 길
• easy 쉬운
• lead 인도하다, 이끌다
• destruction 파괴, 멸망
• hard 어려운, 힘든
• life  생명
• find 찾다, 발견하다
• few 거의 없는

 

4. 직독직해 

영어문장 끊어 읽기를 연습합니다. 영어문장과 끊어서 해석한 우리말을 읽으면서 직독직해를 연습하세요.

① So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. 

• So whatever you wish 그러므로 너희가 원하는 것은 무엇이든지
• that others would do to you 다른 사람들이 너희에게 해 주기를
• do also to them 또한 그들에게 해줘라
• for this is the Law and the Prophets 이것이 율법이며 선지자이다

→ 그러므로 무엇이든지 남에게 대접을 받고자 하는 대로 너희도 남을 대접하라 이것이 율법이요 선지자니라

 

 

② Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.

• Enter by the narrow. 좁은 문으로 들어가라
• For the gate is wide 그 문은 넓고
• and the way is easy 그 길은 쉽다
• that leads to destruction 멸망으로 인도한다
• and those who enter by it 그곳으로 들어가는 사람들은 
• are many 많다

→ 좁은 문으로 들어가라 멸망으로 인도하는 문은 크고 그 길이 넓어 그리로 들어가는 자가 많고

 

♠ 문법노트

For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction

▶ that : 관계대명사

관계대명사는 보통 수식하는 지칭하는 명사 바로 뒤에 오는 것이 원칙이지만 이 문장의 경우 that이 앞에 나오는 the gate와 the way를 동시에 지칭하고 있고 문장의 흐름을 방해하지 않으려고 뒤에 쓴 경우입니다. 

'the gate that leads to destruction is wide and the way that leads to destruction is easy'라는 문장을 위와 같이 줄여서 표현한 것이니다. 영어문법에 너무 얽매이지 말고 순서대로 읽으면서 자연스럽게 의미를 그려보는 연습을 하는 것이 영어를 영어로 생각하는데 도움이 됩니다.  

 

③ For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 

• For the gate is narrow 그 문은 좁고
• and the the way is hard 그 길은 (걸어가기) 힘들다
• that leads to life 생명으로 이끈다
• and those who find it are few 그리고 그것을 찾는 사람들은 거의 없다

→ 생명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 길이 협착하여 찾는 자가 적음이라

 

5. 전체 문장 끊어 읽기

앞에 끊어서 읽으면서 해석한 것을 기억하며 읽어보세요. 영어문장을 읽을 때 끊어진 부분에서 아주 잠깐 쉰다고 생각하면서 읽으면 끊어진 단위대로 해석할 수 있게 됩니다.

6. 전체 문장 다시 읽기

끊어 읽기를 하나하나 생각하는 것이 아니라 전체 내용을 머릿속에 그림을 그리며 읽어보세요. 3-5번 멈추지 않고 읽어볼 것을 권합니다.

7. 자신의 음성으로 녹음하기

영어문장을 읽는 것이 익숙해졌다면 자신의 목소리로 녹음을 한 다음 들으면서 어색한 부분을 점검해 보세요. 이 과정을 통해서 좀 더 자신 있게 영어로 말하는 연습을 할 수 있습니다. 앞에 원어민이 읽어주는 파일과 비교하면서 연습해 보세요.

 

8. 전체문장 반복해서 읽기

자신의 목소리로 녹음해서 원어민 발음과 비교해서 교정을 했다면 이제 마지막으로 무한반복 읽기에 도전하기 바랍니다. 암기한 어휘나 끊어 읽기를 적용하는 것이 아니라 영어문장 자체를 계속 읽으면서 입에서 자연스럽게 나올 수 있게 반복해 보세요.
