2. 영어문장 소리 내서 3번 읽기

뜻을 모르더라도 읽을 수 있다면 일단 3번 읽어보세요. 절대 중간에 끊지 말고 처음부터 끝까지 읽어보세요.

 

Matthew 5:21-26

21 You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgement.' 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgement; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, 'You fool!' will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. 

 

3. 어휘 암기하기

어휘를 암기하는 것은 어휘를 저축하는 것과 같습니다. 암기한 어휘를 문장에 적용시키면 오래도록 기억할 수 있습니다. 이렇게 저축한 어휘는 어느 순간 폭발적으로 효과를 나타냅니다. 

• murder 살인, 살인 사건, 살해하다
• liable 법적 책임이 있는
• be liable to + 명사 ~을 면하지 못하는
• judgement 판단, 심판
• insult 모욕하다
• council 회의, 고의회, 의회
• fool 바보
• hell 지옥
• offer 제공하다, (기도, 제물 등을) 바치다
• gift 설물 예물
• altar 제단
• against ~에 반대하여, ~에 대적하여
• leave 남겨 두다
• reconcile 화해시키다
• be reconciled to ~와 화해하다
• come to terms 합의에 이르다, 합의를 보다

4. 직독직해 

영어문장 끊어 읽기를 연습합니다. 영어문장과 끊어서 해석한 우리말을 읽으면서 직독직해를 연습하세요.

① You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgement.'

• You have heard 너는 들었다
• that it was said to those of old 옛날 사람들에게 전해져 내려오는 것을
• You shall not murder 살인하지 말라
• and whoever murders will be liable to judgement 그리고 살인하는 사람은 누구든지 판결을 면하지 못할 것이다

→ 옛사람에게 말한 바 살인하지 말라 누구든지 살인하면 심판을 받게 되리라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나

 

② But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgement; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, 'You fool!' will be liable to the hell of fire.

• But I say to you 그러나 나는 너에게 말한다
• that everyone who is angry with his brother 형제에게 화를 내는 모든 사람은
• will be liable to judgement 판결을 받게 될 것이다
• whoever insults his brother 형제를 모욕하는 사람은 누구든지
• will be liable to the council 공의회를 면하지 못할 것이다
• and whoever says, 'You fool!' '바보'라고 말하는 사람은 누구든지 
• will be liable to the hell of fire 지옥불을 면하지 못할 것이다

→ 나는 너희에게 이르노니 형제에게 노하는 자마다 심판을 받게 되고 형제를 대하여 라가라 하는 자는 공회에 잡혀가게 되고 미련한 놈이라 하는 자는 지옥 불에 들어가게 되리라

 

③ So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,

• So if you are offering you gift 만약 네가 예물을 드리고 있다면
• at the altar 제단에
• and there remember 그리고 거기에서 기억났다면
• that your brother has something against you 너의 형제가 너에 대해 반대하는 일이 있다는 것이

→ 예물을 제단에 드리려다가 거기서 네 형제에게 원망들을 만한 일이 있는 것이 생각나거든

 

④ leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

• leave you gift there before the altar 네 예물을 거기 제단 앞에 놓고
• and go 가라
• First be reconciled to your brother 먼저 네 형제와 화해하라
• and then come and offer your gift 그러고 나서 와서 제물을 드려라

→ 예물을 제단 앞에 두고 먼저 가서 형제와 화목하고 그 후에 와서 예물을 드리라

 

⑤ Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 

• Come to terms quickly with your accuser 고발하는 사람과 빨리 합의하라
• while you are going with him to court 그와 공의회에 가는 동안에
• lest your accuser hand you 네 고발자가 너를 넘겨주지 않도록
• to the judge 재판관에게
• and the judge to the guard 그리고 재판관이 교도관에게
• and you be put in prison 그리고 네가 감옥에 갇히지 않도록

→ 너는 고발하는 자와 함께 길에 있을 때에 급히 사화 하라 그 고발하는 자가 너를 재판관에게 내어 주고 재판관이 옥리에게 내어 주어 옥에 가둘까 염려하다

 

♠ 문법노트

lest your accuser hand you to the judge and the judge to the guard and you be put in prison

▶ lest + 주어 + (should) + 동사원형

lest(~하지 않도록) 뒤에는 조동사 should를 쓰는데 이때 should를 생략할 수 있습니다. should를 생략하고 나면 동사원형만 남게 됩니다. 이 문장에서 hand와 be 앞에 should가 생략되어 동사원형만 남은 형태입니다. 

▶ 동사가 반복되는 경우 생략 : hand 생략

'and the judge to the guard'에서 the judge 뒤에 동사 hand가 생략되었습니다. 원래 문장은 'and the judge hand to the guard'인데 hand(넘겨주다)가 앞에 나왔기 때문에 문장을 간단하게 만들기 위해 생략했습니다. 

 

⑥ Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

• Truly, I say to you 진실로 내가 네게 말한다
• You will never get out 너는 결코 나오지 못할 것이다
•  until you have paid the last penny 마지막 1 페니를 갚을 때까지 

→ 진실로 네게 이르노니 네가 한 푼이라도 남김이 없이 다 갚기 전에는 결코 거기서 나오지 못하리라

 

 

5. 전체 문장 끊어 읽기

앞에 끊어서 읽으면서 해석한 것을 기억하며 읽어보세요. 영어문장을 읽을 때 끊어진 부분에서 아주 잠깐 쉰다고 생각하면서 읽으면 끊어진 단위대로 해석할 수 있게 됩니다.

6. 전체 문장 다시 읽기

끊어 읽기를 하나하나 생각하는 것이 아니라 전체 내용을 머릿속에 그림을 그리며 읽어보세요. 3-5번 멈추지 않고 읽어볼 것을 권합니다.

7. 자신의 음성으로 녹음하기

영어문장을 읽는 것이 익숙해졌다면 자신의 목소리로 녹음을 한 다음 들으면서 어색한 부분을 점검해 보세요. 이 과정을 통해서 좀 더 자신 있게 영어로 말하는 연습을 할 수 있습니다. 앞에 원어민이 읽어주는 파일과 비교하면서 연습해 보세요.

 

8. 전체문장 반복해서 읽기

자신의 목소리로 녹음해서 원어민 발음과 비교해서 교정을 했다면 이제 마지막으로 무한반복 읽기에 도전하기 바랍니다. 암기한 어휘나 끊어 읽기를 적용하는 것이 아니라 영어문장 자체를 계속 읽으면서 입에서 자연스럽게 나올 수 있게 반복해 보세요.
