뜻을 모르더라도 읽을 수 있다면 일단 3번 읽어보세요. 절대 중간에 끊지 말고 처음부터 끝까지 읽어보세요.

 

Matthew 14:23-27

23 When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid."

 

3. 어휘 암기하기

어휘를 암기하는 것은 어휘를 저축하는 것과 같습니다. 암기한 어휘를 문장에 적용시키면 오래도록 기억할 수 있습니다. 이렇게 저축한 어휘는 어느 순간 폭발적으로 효과를 나타냅니다. 

• alone 혼자, 홀로
• beat (beat-beaten) 치다, 때리다, 부딪치다
• wave 파도
• against ~에 반대해서, ~에 대항해서
• fourth 네 번째
• watch [역사] (초경, 이경, 삼경, 사경 등의) 야간의 한 구분
• disciple 제자
• terrify 겁나게 하다
• ghost 유령
• cry out 소리치다
• fear 두려움, 공포
• in fear 두려워서
• immediately 즉시
• take heart 용기를 내다, 기운을 내다
• afraid 두려운 

 

4. 직독직해 

영어문장 끊어 읽기를 연습합니다. 영어문장과 끊어서 해석한 우리말을 읽으면서 직독직해를 연습하세요.

① When evening came, he was there alone, 

• When eveing came 저녁이 되었을 떼
• he was there alone 예수님은 그 곳에 혼자 계셨다

→ 저물매 거기 혼자 계시더니

 

 

② but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.

• but the boat by this time 그러나 그 즈음 배는
• was a long way from the land 육지에서 멀어졌다
• beaten by the waves 파도가 배에 몰아쳤다
• for the wind was against them 바람이 그들을 거슬러 불었다

→ 배가 이미 육지에서 수 리나 떠나서 바람이 거스르므로 물결로 말미암아 고난을 당하더라

 

③ And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.

• he came to them 예수님이 그들에게 오셨다

→ 밤 사경에 예수께서 바다 위로 걸어서 제자들에게 오시니

 

④ But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out in fear.

• him walking on the sea 예수님이 물 위를 걸어오시는 것을
• they were terrified 그들은 두려웠다

⑤ But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid."

♠ 문법노트

beaten by the waves, / saying 

▶ 분사구문 

문장이 끝나고 콤마(,) 뒤에 과거분사나 현재분사가 오면 'and'를 넣어서 이어지는 듯이 해석하면 됩니다. 과거분사의 경우 수동의 의미이고 현재분사의 경우 능력의 의미가 됩니다. 

 

the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves

→ 그 즈음 배가 육지에서 멀리 떨어졌고, 배는 파도에 부딪치고 있었다. 

→ 그 즈음 배는 육지에서 멀어졌고 파도가 배에 몰아쳤다.

 

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take heart; it is I

→ 그러나 즉시 예수님께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다, 그리고 "용기를 내라. 나다."라고 말씀하셨다.

→ 예수님께서 즉시 "안심해라, 나다"라고 말씀하셨다.

 

5. 전체 문장 끊어 읽기

앞에 끊어서 읽으면서 해석한 것을 기억하며 읽어보세요. 영어문장을 읽을 때 끊어진 부분에서 아주 잠깐 쉰다고 생각하면서 읽으면 끊어진 단위대로 해석할 수 있게 됩니다.

6. 전체 문장 다시 읽기

끊어 읽기를 하나하나 생각하는 것이 아니라 전체 내용을 머릿속에 그림을 그리며 읽어보세요. 3-5번 멈추지 않고 읽어볼 것을 권합니다.

7. 자신의 음성으로 녹음하기

영어문장을 읽는 것이 익숙해졌다면 자신의 목소리로 녹음을 한 다음 들으면서 어색한 부분을 점검해 보세요. 이 과정을 통해서 좀 더 자신 있게 영어로 말하는 연습을 할 수 있습니다. 앞에 원어민이 읽어주는 파일과 비교하면서 연습해 보세요.

 

8. 전체문장 반복해서 읽기

자신의 목소리로 녹음해서 원어민 발음과 비교해서 교정을 했다면 이제 마지막으로 무한반복 읽기에 도전하기 바랍니다. 암기한 어휘나 끊어 읽기를 적용하는 것이 아니라 영어문장 자체를 계속 읽으면서 입에서 자연스럽게 나올 수 있게 반복해 보세요.
